Significance:
Thawban was a freed slave of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). He loved the Prophet dearly and was known for his dedication and loyalty. One day, the Prophet (ﷺ) noticed that Thawban was looking particularly sad and distressed. Concerned, the Prophet asked him about the reason for his sadness.
Thawban replied, "O Messenger of Allah, whenever I do not see you, I miss you so much that I become restless and anxious until I see you again. Then, I remember the Hereafter, and I fear that even if I am admitted into Paradise, I will not be in the same rank as you, and I will not be able to see you there as frequently as I do here."
Thawban was expressing his deep worry that in the Hereafter, he may not be able to be close to the Prophet (ﷺ), even if he made it to Paradise, because the Prophet would be in a much higher rank.
In response, the Prophet (ﷺ) did not immediately answer but shortly after, the following verse from Surah An-Nisa (4:69) was revealed:
“And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger – those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs, and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions.” (4:69)
This verse was a reassurance for Thawban and for all believers that those who sincerely obey Allah and His Messenger will be in the company of the Prophet and the righteous in Paradise.
