The Hilye (or Hilya in Arabic) is a description of the physical and moral characteristics of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). The word Hilye means "ornament" or "adornment" and refers to the beautiful portrayal of the Prophet’s outward appearance and inward character. Hilye texts were traditionally written in Islamic calligraphy and adorned with art as a way of expressing love and reverence for the Prophet (ﷺ).

Traditional Hilye Text:

Here is a widely known description from Ali ibn Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه), the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet (ﷺ), describing the appearance of the Prophet:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

The Prophet (ﷺ) was neither too tall nor too short; he was of medium stature among the people. His hair was neither curly nor completely straight, but it was slightly wavy. He was neither extremely white nor dark-skinned, but he had a fair complexion with a reddish hue.

When he walked, it was as if he descended from a height. When he turned to speak to someone, he turned completely towards them. The seal of prophethood was between his shoulders.

He was the most generous-hearted of people, the most truthful in speech, the most mild-tempered, and the noblest in lineage. Anyone who saw him unexpectedly would be in awe of him, and anyone who came to know him would love him. Those who described him said, “I have never seen anyone like him, neither before nor after him.”
